How to level up on Steam, with a level 30 profile ring, an XP progress bar and badges that give XP

You level up on Steam by earning XP, and almost all XP comes from badges. The main way is crafting trading card badges: each badge level gives 100 XP, and you can craft each game's badge five times. The XP needed per level starts at 100 and rises by 100 every 10 levels, so reaching level 10 takes 1,000 XP and level 50 takes 15,000. Steam Points, your account's age and a few yearly events add more on top.

How Steam levels work

Your Steam level is, in Valve's words, "a summary of your badges." Every badge you earn adds XP to your account, and your level is worked out from your total XP. Valve's Steam Trading Cards FAQ says "most badges give 100 XP, and it takes 100 XP to get to the next level," and that "the amount needed to level up increases every 10 levels."

The exact curve is simple: every level in the 0-9 bracket costs 100 XP, every level from 10 to 19 costs 200 XP, every level from 20 to 29 costs 300 XP, and it keeps rising by 100 XP every 10 levels. We checked this against Steam's own badge data (its GetBadges Web API) for accounts at levels 32, 74 and 5,001 in October 2026, and the XP totals matched exactly.

XP per level rises by 100 every 10 levels. Level 50 takes 15,000 XP in total, the same as 150 card badge levels.

203,000300
306,000400
5015,000600

Because each bracket costs more, the first levels come quickly and later ones slow down. Going from level 0 to 10 takes 10 card badges. Going from 90 to 100 takes 100.

Every way to earn Steam XP

Card badges and the Seasonal Badge are the only sources you can repeat as much as you like. Every other source is capped, either by time (one per year) or by a one-off set of tasks.

Crafting trading card badges

Crafting card badges is the main way to level up on Steam, and the only route with no ceiling. Every game with trading cards has a badge, and every level of it gives 100 XP. You can craft the same game's badge up to five times, so each game is worth up to 500 XP. Each craft also gives you a random emoticon and profile background from that game.

You get about half of each set from card drops while a game runs. The rest has to come from trading, the Steam Community Market or booster packs. Our guide to how Steam trading cards work covers drops, booster packs and selling in detail.

What it costs depends on the game. Market prices for cards vary a lot from set to set, and the price a buyer pays includes Steam's and the publisher's fees. Many players start with the games they already own, since those drops are free, then buy the missing cards for the cheapest sets. Crafting a set again for a badge upgrade needs another full set, including the cards you'd normally get from drops.

Foil cards drop rarely and craft into a separate foil badge. That badge has one level and gives 100 XP, and Valve says foils carry "no extra benefit" beyond their rarity.

Steam Points and the Seasonal Badge

The Points Shop's Seasonal Badge turns Steam Points into XP. Valve's Seasonal Badge page says these badges "contribute towards profile XP," and the current badge has 40 levels. Each level costs 1,000 points, which Steam's Points Shop data lists as the price per level. The shop page shows a running total, so level 40 appears as 40,000 points.

Each level gives 100 XP. We confirmed this with Steam's badge data: a Summer 2026 Seasonal Badge at level 40 was worth exactly 4,000 XP.

Points mostly come from spending money on Steam. Valve's How Do Points Work? page gives "100 points for every $1.00 you spend" on games, DLC, hardware and in-game items. Funding your Steam Wallet and buying from the Community Market earn nothing. Valve says you can also get points "by contributing to the Steam Community."

That makes the maths straightforward:

  • 1,000 points = 100 XP = one Seasonal Badge level
  • 1,000 points is about $10 USD spent on Steam
  • A full 40-level badge = 40,000 points = 4,000 XP

Valve adds a new Seasonal Badge "during the Summer and Winter sales," so each new season gives another 40 levels to buy. Points don't expire, so you can save them for the next one. Buying games just to earn points is an expensive way to get XP, but if you buy on Steam anyway, the points are free XP.

Free ways to earn Steam XP

These sources cost nothing, but most of them are small or only come once a year.

  • Years of Service. Steam gives this badge on your account's anniversary. It's worth 50 XP per year: a 12-year-old account's badge was worth 600 XP when we checked.
  • Steam Replay. Viewing your yearly Steam Replay gives a badge worth 50 XP. Digital Trends reported in 2024 that "all you need to do to earn the badge is view your Replay," and Steam's badge data shows a new 50 XP badge each December from 2022 to 2025.
  • Steam Awards. For the 2025 Steam Awards, Valve gave a nominations badge for nominating a game, and leveled it up for nominating in all 11 categories, playing a game you nominated and reviewing one. In 2023, Valve said completing every task earned "100 profile XP." Nominations have opened in late November in recent years.
  • Steam Community badge. Valve calls this "the easiest way to get a badge." It levels up as you complete basic tasks on Steam, which its badge page lists.
  • Game Collector. This badge grows with the number of games in your library. In the three public profiles we checked, its XP equaled the number of games plus 250. A 619-game library's badge was worth 869 XP.

Older guides still mention sale trading cards and sale badges that could be leveled without limit. Those belonged to past events. Valve's announcements for the 2025 Winter Sale and the 2026 Summer and Autumn Sales mention stickers and Points Shop items, not sale trading cards.

The fastest way to level up on Steam

The fastest way to level up on Steam is crafting card badges in bulk, five levels per game. Nothing else scales. A full Seasonal Badge is worth 4,000 XP, the same as 40 card badge levels, but it costs 40,000 points.

The cheapest way is the slower one: craft badges from the drops you already get, buy only the missing cards, and let the free badges add up over time. Some players sell drops from games they don't care about and put the Wallet funds toward cards for the sets they want to craft.

Keep expectations honest. Higher levels cost real money in cards, and Market prices change. A level is a profile feature, not an investment.

What higher Steam levels unlock

Leveling up on Steam is mostly cosmetic, but Valve's FAQ lists a few real benefits:

  • More friends. Your friends list limit goes up by five every level.
  • Profile showcases. You can pick a showcase at level 10 and earn an extra one every 10 levels.
  • More booster packs. Once you're eligible for booster packs, your level raises the drop rate: +20% at level 10, rising by 20 points every 10 levels to +100% (double) at level 50.

Why is my Steam level stuck at 0?

Your account is probably limited. Steam's Limited User Accounts page lists "Gaining Steam Profile Levels (Locked to level 0) and Trading Cards" among the restricted features. Spending at least $5 USD on Steam lifts the limit, and from then on badges count toward your level.

How Steam Game Idler helps you level up

Steam Game Idler doesn't craft badges for you; crafting happens on your Steam badge page. It handles the two slow parts around crafting: collecting the cards and sorting out which ones to keep.

  • Card drops. Card Farming works through every game in your library that still has drops left, up to 32 at a time, without downloading or playing them. That's the free half of every set.
  • Badge levels at a glance. The Inventory Manager reads your badge levels from Steam. A card's game name turns green once you've crafted that game's badge, and hovering it shows the Badge level, or No badge crafted. You can filter by Has badge and sort by Badge level to see which sets you're already working on.
  • Keeping cards for crafting. Lock a card and it's never sold automatically. Sell dupes (Gamer tier) keeps one copy of each item and skips locked items. If you're saving extra copies to upgrade a badge, lock them first.

Card Farming and the Inventory Manager are free. Download Steam Game Idler to start collecting the drops your library still has.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to level up on Steam?

Crafting trading card badges, up to five levels per game, at 100 XP each. It's the only XP source without a cap. The Points Shop's Seasonal Badge adds 100 XP per 1,000 points, and Steam gives 100 points per $1 USD you spend, so it's fast only if you were buying on Steam anyway.

How can I level up on Steam for free?

Craft badges from the card drops you get from games you own, and collect the free badges: Years of Service (50 XP a year), Steam Replay (50 XP a year), the Steam Awards badge, the Steam Community badge and Game Collector. Your account must not be limited, which means at least $5 USD spent on Steam.

How much XP do you need for level 100 on Steam?

55,000 XP in total. Levels 0-9 cost 100 XP each, and the cost rises by 100 XP every 10 levels, so levels 90-99 cost 1,000 XP each. That's the same as 550 card badge levels.

Do Steam Points give XP?

Not directly. Points only become XP when you spend them on the Points Shop's Seasonal Badge, which gives 100 XP per level for 1,000 points. Your level is built from badges, and Valve describes the Seasonal Badge as the Points Shop item that contributes "towards profile XP." Avatars, backgrounds and chat items are cosmetic.

Do achievements give Steam XP?

No. Your Steam level comes from badges, and achievements aren't badges. Unlocking achievements doesn't earn XP or trading cards.

What does a higher Steam level do?

It raises your friends list limit by five per level, unlocks an extra profile showcase every 10 levels, and increases your booster pack drop rate up to double at level 50.
